Thanks for writing this, Lisa. There’s a lot to like about your essay, but one thing I thought to mention is that you avoid the sentimentality and condescension that too often comes with commentary on getting older—for women and men. (In fact, you call it out.) For me, a big part of living—and, perhaps, one thing that might get a little less difficult as one gets older—is teasing out that difference between what I actually think and feel as opposed to what I believe I should think and feel. It’s a big part of being an artist (the bedrock maybe?) but also of being, and becoming, human…. Maybe it gets a little less difficult as one gets older because you start to feel you have less to lose, and to realize how ephemeral that the feeling itself —of having something to lose—really is….
